Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE®)

TRE (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises) is a body-based practice that supports the nervous system’s natural capacity for regulation and release.

The practice uses a series of simple physical exercises to gently evoke an involuntary trembling response. These tremors are a natural physiological mechanism found across mammals and can help release patterns of tension, stress, and activation held in the body.

TRE is not about forcing catharsis or reliving difficult experiences.

Instead, it invites careful listening to the body’s own timing and intelligence.

My approach is trauma-informed and paced slowly. Sessions emphasise safety, choice, and the cultivation of self-regulation. Attention is placed on bodily sensations, impulses, and the ongoing relationship between activation and rest.

There is no need to explain or analyse experience. Much of the work may be non-verbal.

Some people come to TRE seeking relief from stress or anxiety. Others are interested in exploring the relationship between body and mind, or in deepening an existing therapeutic or contemplative practice.

TRE can stand alone as a complete way of working, or it can be integrated with other approaches.

An introduction to TRE

What happens in a session?

Sessions begin with a brief conversation about your experience and intentions.

You will then be guided through a series of gentle exercises that prepare the body for tremoring. Once tremors arise, the emphasis shifts from doing to listening — noticing sensations, adjusting intensity, and allowing the experience to unfold at a pace that feels manageable.

Throughout the session, you remain in control. Tremoring can be paused or stopped at any time.

Sessions conclude with time for rest and integration.

Who is TRE for?

TRE may be of interest to people who:

— experience chronic stress or tension;

— wish to develop greater nervous system awareness;

— are curious about body-based approaches to wellbeing;

— are engaged in therapy or contemplative practice and wish to include the body more directly;

— are looking for a gentle, experiential approach to self-regulation.

No previous experience is required.
